The purpose of this experiment is to see how cells are affected by osmosis as a result of being exposed to a hypertonic solution.
Osmosis is the net movement of water from an area of high water potential to an area of low water potential through a selectively permeable membrane. It is a method of transporting chemicals across the membrane through passive movement (where energy such as ATP is not required).
Transport of water can be carried out as the water particals are small enough to pass through aquaporin's (integral channel proteins) that are embedded in the lipid bilayer of the membrane.
Osmosis is based on three types of mediums. Firstly the isotonic medium which is when the level of water potential is balanced both inside and outside of the cell. Secondly a hypotonic medium where there is high water potential outside of the cell. Thirdly a hypertonic medium which has a low level of water potential outside of the cell.
The egg shells are dissolved in vinegar to produce 'naked eggs'. They are the cells exposed to the effects of osmosis. This experiment investigates how the concentration of sugar in a water based solution from 55% to 70% effects the percentage change in mass (g) of eggs.
